Senator Tran: I’m Running a Grassroots Campaign

October 3, 2018

I have a very simple directive to my campaign, that is, stay focused and run a positive, honest and result-oriented campaign. We operate like a business where planning and execution are important and based on scheduling and milestones.

When the Sentinel & Enterprise newspaper contacted my campaign for a debate, my campaign professionally declined the offer with an explanation that we have already accepted two debates. One of the two requests was made well in advance, back in July. We did not, in any shape or form, inquire about the newspaper’s format nor did we ask for questions. This is why it is extremely disheartening to read the September 30 “Sunday Notebook” commentary where the reporter wrote, “Incumbent Republican State Senator Dean Tran’s refusal to participate in debates without being given the questions in advance continues to be campaign fodder for his Democratic challenger.” One can see the many inaccuracies in this statement. Further, the commentary also wrote that I “would rather” respond to written questions. My campaign made this offer as a gesture to accommodate the newspaper’s request and not in the fashion as insinuated in the commentary. In addition, the newspaper’s debate format is almost identical and in the same location as one of the debates that my campaign has already accepted with the exception of length. Not only does the request not fit into our schedule, but it is also redundant. I, personally, suggested to the newspaper to co-host with the debate that we have already accept and the length can be extended as they see fit.

I have wonderful supporters and volunteers who help run a grassroots campaign. We do not employ any strategy firm and we do not resort to political stunts and shenanigans in desperate attempts for attention and publicity. We run on honesty, hard work, accomplishments, and results. I have great respect for the Sentinel & Enterprise and if the newspaper would like to print positive news for the district, we welcome the newspaper with open arms because we have accomplished great things and we are moving the district forward. If the newspaper would like to sensationalize negative campaigning, all we ask is for the newspaper to be accurate and factual.
