Georgia deputy shooting suspect charged in unrelated killing
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — A man arrested this week for shooting at a Georgia sheriff’s deputy has now been charged with murder for a shooting death Jan. 12.
Rex Allen Stewart Jr. was charged Thursday with the death of 41-year-old Sean Bussard near Augusta. Richmond County deputies did not immediately explain what led to Stewart’s arrest on the murder charge.
Stewart and Cyndi Faye Bowen were arrested Wednesday and charged with shooting at a deputy during a traffic stop. They are charged with aggravated assault on an officer and two weapons charges. It wasn’t known if they have attorneys.
The department said a man in the car Deputy Nicholas Nunes stopped fired at the officer, who returned fire. Nunes suffered only minor injuries when he took cover. He’s on leave during an investigation.
