On Hodgman and the shield
You may have noticed that Justin Hodgman, the Komets’ leading scorer, was wearing a full face shield in Friday’s 5-2 victory over the Wichita Thunder. Because I’m all about the big scoops, I tracked him down this afternoon as he was preparing for the other big game of today - Hodgie’s son vs. Jamie Schaafsma’s son in a mite championship - and found out. (No, I don’t know which kid emerged victorious, so disregard that scoop comment.)
Hodgman got shouldered in the head in a game last week at Wheeling, West Virginia, and so he wanted some extra protection for his noggin. At least for now.
Remember, he missed almost the entire playoffs last season with a concussion, so it’s probably a wise move. And since Hodgman had two assists Friday, it didn’t seem to affect his game much.
The Komets play host to Toledo at 7:30 p.m. today.
Newly acquired defenseman Trey Phillips was supposed to join the Komets today. I don’t know if he’ll be in the lineup, however.
