Fire officials suspect arson in Tallahassee church fire
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Fire officials say they suspect arson was the cause of a fire at a church near Florida State University in Tallahassee.
Church members noticed the fire just before an afternoon mass Wednesday at the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas.
Tallahassee Fire Department officials say someone set four chairs on fire at the church.
Father John Cayer tells The Tallahassee Democrat it would be hard to forgive someone for setting the fire. He says they will rebuild.
Dasha Nixon, the church’s business manager, says someone could have slipped in through a side door that was unlocked for people who arrive early for mass.
Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis said in a statement that he’s saddened by the arson. He says arson detectives will be assisting in the investigation.
