Rudy Galindo Booked on DUI Charge, Released
LOS GATOS, Calif. (AP) _ Defending national figure skating champion Rudy Galindo ``drank way too much″ before he was arrested for investigation of drunken driving early Tuesday, his agent said.
Police pulled Galindo over around 2 a.m. after he drove out of the parking lot at the Last Call Bar and his 1996 BMW bounced over a curb, police said.
Michael Rosenberg, Galindo’s agent, said the skater was drinking with a friend and ``drank way too much.″ Galindo left the club to take the woman home because she felt sick.
Galindo is sorry for the incident, takes full responsibility and is just glad no one was hurt, Rosenberg said in a telephone interview.
``It has never happened before, and it will never happen again,″ Rosenberg said. ``He is extremely sorry it happened.″
Galindo, 26, who was booked for investigation of misdemeanor drunken driving, has a mandatory court hearing within 90 days.
The skater, who lives in nearby San Jose, failed a breath test, according to Bonny Eckert, spokeswoman for the police department in this town 45 miles southeast of San Francisco.
``His car came out of the lot, went off a curb and made an illegal left turn,″ she said.
In one of skating’s biggest upsets, Galindo won the men’s title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships earlier this year.
Galindo was twice a national pairs champion with Kristi Yamaguchi before she went on to solo success and an Olympic gold medal. In recent years, Galindo never placed higher than fifth in nationals.
Galindo’s had personal problems as his career soared. Coach Jim Hulick died of colon cancer in 1989. His father, Jess Galindo, died of a heart attack in April 1993, and six months later his brother George died of AIDS. He also lost coach Rick Inglesi to AIDS.
According to Rich Kitson of the Santa Clara County Department of Correction, Galindo was released about seven hours after his arrest.
Kitson did not talk with Galindo, but he said people who helped book the skater described him as ``typical Galindo, quiet and gracious.″
