Couple charged with taking 3 children heads to court

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut mother and her boyfriend charged with taking the woman’s three children from a supervised visit to Mexico are heading to court.

Crystal McGrath and Lester Joy are scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Monday.

They were extradited from Texas on Friday after they were taken into custody last month in Mazatlan, Mexico, where the children were found safe.

Authorities say McGrath, the children’s noncustodial mother, took them out a side door of a Waterbury McDonald’s in February during a visit supervised by the state Department of Children and Families.

McGrath and Joy are being held on $500,000 bail pending their arraignment on charges of custodial interference and risk of injury.

The children are with a legal guardian.
