Dow Up 17; Nasdaq Rises 11

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices have started slightly higher on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is ahead 17 points. Gainers outnumber losers by about 5-4 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Nasdaq Composite Index is up 11 points and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index has added two points.

Wall Street has some better-than-expected news on the economy and earnings to help it get back into the win column today.

The market was lower yesterday, halting a two-day advance.

This morning, the government released a stronger-than-anticipated report on January retail sales, at least excluding auto sales.

And Applied Materials and Viacom are out with earnings reports that topped estimates. Marriott’s results fell short.
