Bond denied for man charged in wounding of police officer

July 10, 2018

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Bond has been denied for a Mississippi man accused of shooting and wounding a police officer last month.

News outlets report 23-year-old Victor Kirksey appeared Tuesday in Lamar County Justice Court, and a judge returned him to jail. Kirksey is charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer.

Hattiesburg police spokesman Ryan Moore said June 18 that Kirksey shot an officer trying to serve a search warrant on a house. Moore said Kirksey was injured as he was caught and was taken to Forrest General Hospital. Kirksey was moved June 29 to the Lamar County jail.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was treated for a leg wound and left the hospital the same day.

A defense attorney says Kirksey is not a flight risk.
