Gift of Life blood drive collects 590 pints of blood
RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — Organizers for one of the largest American Red Cross blood drives in the United States say a winter snowstorm didn’t stop them from collecting close to 600 pints of blood.
Steve Costello, organizer of the annual Gift of Life Marathon and a vice president at Green Mountain Power, tells The Rutland Herald many first time donors came out for the event held Dec. 20-22 in Rutland.
The city is known for its large blood donations, breaking an American Red Cross record in 2013 with 2,350 pints donated in a single day.
The blood drive held a competition this year between teams who donated the most blood. The winning team, Green Mountain Power, will receive a trophy and a maple-flavored ice cream party hosted by the Vermont Truffle Company.
