BRIAN MAY DEBUTS SONG IN HONOR OF NASA’S NEW HORIZONS
LAUREL, Md. (AP) — NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has survived humanity’s most distant exploration of another world. Ten hours after the middle-of-the-night encounter 4 billion miles (6.4 billion kilometers) away, flight controllers in Laurel, Maryland, received word from the spacecraft late Tuesday morning. Cheers erupted at Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory, home to Mission Control. New Horizons zoomed past the small celestial object known as Ultima Thule (THOO’-lee) 3 ½ years after its spectacular brush with Pluto. Queen guitarist Brian May, who also happens to be an astrophysicist, joined the team at Johns Hopkins for a midnight premiere of the song he wrote for the big event.

ROSE PARADE FLOAT BREAKS DOWN
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California, hit a snag today when a float had a minor fire. The Chinese American Heritage Foundation float was near the end of the parade when it broke down, forcing a delay in the parade. Marching bands and equestrian units could move around it, but bigger floats could not. A tow truck pulled the float a short distance. By then, national coverage of the parade had ended, a finale involving pop singer Anne-Marie was over and spectators started to leave. Among the other celebrities in the parade were RJ Mitte (MIT’-ee), Carson Kressley, Kool and the Gang, Portugal. The Man, and grand marshal Chaka Khan.

HELLO, 2019: REVELRY AND REFLECTION GREET NEW YEAR
NEW YORK (AP) — A drenching rain couldn’t keep crowds from packing Times Square for the traditional crystal ball drop and a string of star performances. Christina Aguilera pumped up the crowd, performing in a snow-white dress and coat while partygoers danced in their rain ponchos. Bebe Rexha sang John Lennon’s “Imagine” just before the midnight ball drop. The celebration took place under tight security. Partygoers were checked for weapons and then herded into pens, ringed by metal barricades, where they waited for the stroke of midnight. But the weather forced police to scrap plans to fly a drone to help keep watch over the crowd. Revelers paid up to $10 for plastic ponchos trying to stay dry. Umbrellas were banned for security reasons.

RICKY MARTIN AND HUSBAND WELCOME BABY GIRL
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ricky Martin is starting the new year with a new bundle of joy. The Grammy-nominated singer announced the arrival of his daughter with an Instagram post showing off the infant’s tiny hands. Martin says the girl is named Lucia. Martin’s post didn’t include any additional details, other than that the baby girl is healthy. Martin’s post says his family, which includes husband Jwan Yosef and 10-year-old twin sons, have “fallen in love with Lucia.” The “Living La Vida Loca” singer garnered an Emmy nomination earlier this year for his supporting role in the FX series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”
