VERNON, N.J. (AP) _ A 12-year-old Connecticut girl died Monday after skiing off a trail and hitting rocks, police said.

Laura Cournoyer of Seymour, Conn., had been skiing with family and friends at the Mountain Creek ski resort. She left the trail and struck the rocks at 3:15 p.m., suffering head injuries, officials said.

She was flown to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Mountain Creek opened on December 24 and Laura’s death was the resort’s first fatality, officials said.
