Your Turn: Dec. 25

Walls don’t workGeorge Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”History informs us that in the long run, walls do not accomplish their builder’s intent. Both the Mongols and Manchus breached the Great Wall of China. Hadrian’s and the Antonine walls did not keep England and Scotland from becoming one country. The Berlin Wall did not keep a great European city divided. The plan to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico will not secure us in the long run. Indeed, one is more likely to be shot in a place of gathering such as a school, church or synagogue by an American citizen than by an undocumented immigrant. The majority of immigrants who risk their lives to come here seek employment, just as they have done since the founding of this country. This country is great because of its immigrants. Those who wish to make America great again and who insist upon the values of the Good Book should take to mind and heart the dictum that whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers and sisters, you did unto me.Phillip BallezaBeloved by MuslimsI want to wish my Christian friends a very merry Christmas this holiday season. Many people have several misconceptions about my faith, Islam. One of them is that Muslims don’t believe in Jesus (peace be upon him). But not only are Muslims required to believe in Jesus as a holy messenger of God, their faith is incomplete without accepting all the prophets of God.Mary, the mother of Jesus, holds a distinct status in Islam as well. An entire chapter in the Quran is named after her (Chapter 19). The Quran states, “O Mary, Allah (God) has chosen thee and purified thee and chosen thee above the women of all peoples.”The Holy Quran also recounts, “When the angels said, ‘O Mary, Allah gives thee glad tidings of a word from Him; his name shall be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honored in this world and in the next, and of those who are granted nearness to God.’”Hence, Jesus is not only beloved to Christians, but to all Muslims as well.As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I wish you all a joyous holiday season!Aiza Butt, Fort WorthA Christmas wishThe other day, a guy went into a local restaurant, and it was crowded except for a seat at the counter by a San Antonio police officer, a Bexar County deputy and a state trooper. He sat down, ordered and struck up a conversation with the three. One asked if he had finished his Christmas shopping, and he said he had. Then another asked if he had a Christmas wish.At this point he was fairly comfortable with them and said, half-kiddingly, but also based on his observations in San Antonio for many years, “Yes, officer. I wish I could live long enough to see any one of you give a ticket to someone caught speeding in a pickup truck.”To which one of them of immediately replied, “That’s a pretty outlandish statement, sir. I mean, nobody lives forever.”J. Turner
