Winona man charged with sexual assault of girl, 14
A 71-year-old Winona man accused of molesting a girl more than 10 years ago appeared in court Monday on felony sexual assault charges.
Albert Lloyd Haxton was charged in Winona County Court with first-degree criminal sexual conduct after police learned of a sexual assault that took place between Sept. 3, 2006 and Sept. 1, 2007.
According to the criminal complaint, a witness reported the assault to police after finding a reference to it in the woman’s childhood journal.
Speaking with police, the woman said the assault took place when she was approximately 14 years old, while she and her mother were living with Haxton at a residence in Winona.
According to the complaint, she had climbed into bed with Haxton after she become “too scared to sleep in her own bedroom.”
Haxton admitted to touching the girl but claimed it was a case of mistaken identity. He told police he believed the girl was someone else living in the house at the time, the complaint said.
He told police that he stopped immediately upon realizing his mistake and contacted the girl’s mother.
In court Monday, Third District Court judge James Fabian released Haxton on his on recognizance on the condition that he have no contact with the woman, remain law-abiding and make all future court appearance. He was also given the option of posting a $20,000 bond without conditions.
Haxton’s next court date is set for 1:30 p.m. on June 27.
