T.V. Reporter Found Slain
TEMPLE, Texas (AP) _ A TV reporter was found slain inside her apartment Thursday and police were questioning a man discovered at the scene with blood on his clothes.
KWTX reporter Kathryn Dettman, 36, had apparently just gotten out of the shower when she was attacked and beaten to death, police spokesman Tony Hennes said. Hennes said police found the unidentified suspect inside the apartment.
Friday would have been Ms. Dettman’s last day at KWTX. She was supposed to start work next week as a general assignment reporter for KTVT-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth.
Ms. Dettman was a former employee of The Associated Press. She began work in the Los Angeles bureau in 1990, transferred to broadcast services in Washington a year later and left the AP in April 1993.
Ms. Dettman was a graduate of Cal State-Northridge in suburban Los Angeles and had been an AP Television Radio Association scholarship winner. APTRA is the AP broadcast association for California and Nevada.
``She was a person determined to succeed, with the pluckiness to bounce back from any adversity,″ said Los Angeles AP Bureau Chief Andy Lippman. ``She was very goal-oriented and approached it with a cheery determination to succeed, and was undaunted by any obstacles, either personal or professional.″
