Report: Nets Set To Hire Jackson

May 28, 2000

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) _ The New Jersey Nets are set to hire Michael Jackson, the former Georgetown basketball player-turned television executive, as team president, according to a published report.

The Star-Ledger of Newark, citing unidentified sources, also reported Sunday that the Nets are interested in hiring John Thompson, Jackson’s former college coach, as director of basketball operations.

Nets team officials could not be reached for comment.

``Michael’s got the president’s job,″ the newspaper quoted one person close to the team’s search as saying.

But the paper also reported that Thompson might prefer to coach in the NBA, and pass up a front office job with the Nets.

``I think the ownership would give him a shot at being the coach,″ the source told the newspaper. ``I think they think enough of him to do that. He’s a name coach.″

The paper reported an announcement could come as early as Tuesday.
