Reduce Re-injury For Athletes

May 20, 2019

Editor: This is a follow-up to your May 6 article about athletes who had reconstructive ACL surgery. To add to the research cited, there was an article published in July 2016 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (“Simple Decision Rules Reduce Reinjury Risk After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction”) regarding re-injury rates. One of the findings noted that can significantly reduce the risk on re-injury is delaying the athletes return to competitive sport. As cited in the study “for every month that return to sport was delayed, until nine months after ACL reconstruction, the rate of re-injury was reduced by 51 percent” This is a significant finding and can add to the decision-making process.
