Red Auerbach’s Wife Dies
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Dorothy Auerbach, wife of legendary Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach, has died. She was 83.
Dorothy Auerbach died Saturday night in a Washington hospital following a lengthy illness.
Married for the past six decades, she remained mostly in Washington during NBA seasons, traveling to Boston to help celebrate the many Celtics championships, or when her husband received a major honor.
Red Auerbach took over as general manager and coach in 1950s, and remains closely associated with the team, currently as vice chairman of the board.
Dorothy Auerbach wrote children’s books and poetry, and was an avid swimmer, according to The Boston Globe.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
The family has requested that any donations be made in her name to the Red Auerbach Foundation in Boston.
