Fleshner, Ishimatsu win 1-meter diving titles
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Aaron Fleshner easily won the men’s 1-meter title and Tory Ishimatsu took the women’s title at the USA Diving winter national championships Tuesday.
Fleshner, of Spring, Texas, totaled 805.15 points for his second national title, beating Clark Thomas of Olathe, Kan., who took second with 695.85. Connor Kuremsky finished third at 692.85. Scores carried over from preliminaries to finals.
Fleshner had the highest degree of difficulty of anyone. In the prelims, his inward 2½ pike, with a degree of difficulty of 3.4 — the most difficult dive performed in the contest — earned 78.20 points after receiving 8s from three judges. He earned 76.50 points on that same dive in the finals. He received 78.40 points on his front 2½ with one twist in the finals.
Ishimatsu, of Seal Beach, Calif., rallied to win her second career national title with 536.15 points. She was fourth after prelims. In the finals, she scored more than 50 points on four of her five dives, including 63.70 on her front 2½ pike.
Kara McCormack, of Austin, Texas, was second at 532.60. Thea Vock of Clermont, Fla., finished third at 526.00.
The meet continues through Sunday.
