Coffeemaker Recalled; Can Overheat, Catch Fire
SHELTON, Conn. (AP) _ Black & Decker Inc. says it is voluntarily recalling two space-saving coffeemakers because they can overheat and catch fire.
The recall applies to all Model PDC401 and Model PDC403 Spacemaker Plus Thermal Carafe Coffeemakers bought after July 1988.
The coffeemakers, which ordinarily hang from underneath kitchen cabinets, overheat when water does not flow properly from the reservoir to the heating unit, Black & Decker said.
Company officials said Wednesday they are aware of ″a few instances″ of such fires.
Black & Decker said customers who return the coffeemakers will get a free substitute plus a full refund or a certificate for a redesigned model, which is expected to be available in April.
The toll-free number for instructions on how to return the coffeemakers is 1-800-833-3396.
