MORRISVILLE, Pa. (AP) _ A 13-year-old boy has been accused of stabbing a neighbor in her home as one of her three young children watched part of the deadly attack.
Kareem B. Watts was arraigned on first-degree murder charge early today and ordered held without bail at a juvenile detention center. If convicted of the charge, Watts could the death penalty.
The body of Darlyne Jules, 33, was found by her 7-year-old son Tuesday morning. Her 3-year-old son and week-old daughter were also in the home.
Irene Bussey, who described herself as Jules’ best friend, said the 7-year-old ran to the apartment complex across the street after finding his mother.
``He was afraid. He said, `Something is wrong with my mom; she won’t wake up,‴ said Bussey, who also lives in the complex.
The boy told authorities that he saw Watts come into the house to use the phone at about 10 p.m. Monday. About an hour later, according to court papers, he heard his mother screaming for him to call the police. When he went downstairs, he said he saw his mother lying on the sofa with Watts on top of her, and saw Watts stab his mother in the chest.
The boy said he ran upstairs and called to his mother, but Watts responded that he was helping Jules with some clothing.
Jules, a native of Haiti, had been renting the house in the community across the Delaware River from Trenton, N.J., for about a year and a half.
Prosecutor Diane Gibbons said she knew of no motive.
