LONDON (AP) _ Former champion Kirkland Laing withdrew Monday from Wednesday’s fight against Sylvester Mittee for the vacant British welterweight boxing title because of flu.

Instead, Mittee will be paired with an as yet unnamed opponent in a nontitle bout at the Alexandra Palace.

Laing, who once beat Roberto Duran, held the British title in 1979 before losing to Colin Jones. It recently became vacant when titleholder Lloyd Honeyghan gave it up to challenge and beat American Don Curry for the undisputed world crown.

PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) - Surgery on the left shin of Phoenix Suns guard Bernard Thompson has been canceled because a stress fracture has been healing faster than expected, the NBA team said Monday.

Dr. William Hamilton was to have operated on Thompson Tuesday in New York, said Suns spokesman Tom Ambrose.

″The injury didn’t heal over the summer, and he (Hamilton) scheduled the surgery to stimulate bone growth,″ Ambrose said.

Thompson, a 6-foot-6, third-year player acquired in 1985 from the Portland Trail Blazers, played the last two weeks of last season with the stress fracture of his left tibia. He finished with an 8.5-points-a-game average for 61 appearances, including 20 starts.

Ambrose said Hamilton had projected Thompson’s recovery time at six weeks following surgery. The player apparently will return without surgery in the same length of time, Ambrose said.
