Race Track Fire Kills More Than 20 Thoroughbreds
HENDERSON, Ky. (AP) _ An early morning fire destroyed a barn at the Ellis Park race track Monday, killing more than 20 thoroughbred horses.
Stable hands ran through the blazing barn and released some horses so they could run to safety.
The No. 2 horse at the Kentucky Derby, Tejano Run, was in a barn away from the fire and was not hurt.
The track has 40 barns handling about 1,000 horses. The number and identity of the horses killed weren’t immediately known.
``There are million-dollar horses and there are $500,000 horses,″ said Richard Schnaars, the track’s vice president and general manager.
