5 Semifinalists for Fire Chief to Be Interviewed

July 28, 2018

WESTMINSTER -- The Fire Chief Search Committee plans to interview five semifinalists in August.

“They all seem very qualified,” said Town Administrator Karen Murphy, who serves on the committee. “The process is going along well.”

She said about 20 people applied for the position. Most of the candidates are from Massachusetts and a few come from New Hampshire and Vermont, Murphy said.

Interviews will take place Aug. 16 in executive session, she said.

The screening committee is looking for a successor for Kevin Nivala, who retired at the end of May after serving as chief for four years and working for the department for 35 years.

Capt. Kyle Butterfield was appointed acting chief to head the department during the search.

The committee looked at each of the applicant’s experience and reference letters, she said.

Members reviewed each application and rated them, Murphy said, which helped the group come up with five semifinalists.

The goal is to narrow down the semifinalists to two or three candidates for the Board of Selectmen to consider.

Murphy said the finalists will be announced publicly and the interviews will be open for the public to attend.

The process is expected to be completed in the fall.

After hiring a fire chief, the town will begin the search for a new police chief.
