British mining company fined $4.5M in Chile
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Regulators in Chile have ordered British mining company Anglo American Plc to pay a fine of $4.5 million for violations at one of the five copper mines it operates in the country.
The Superintendent of the Environment says it found 16 violations at the El Soldado mine. Violations found during a 2013 inspection included inadequate reforestation and water pollution from sulfates and sodium.
The agency said in a statement Tuesday that the company has five days to appeal.
Anglo American said it has begun addressing all of the issues and has not yet decided whether to appeal the fine. The company said it has reforested about 130 acres and will have completed more than 320 acres by the end of the year at the mine 80 miles northwest of Santiago.
