NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices are higher today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 26 points. Gainers on the New York Stock Exchange hold a 2-1 lead over losers.

The Nasdaq Composite Index has gained eight points and the Standard & Poor's 500 Stock Index is ahead four points.

Stocks are managing small gains after deep losses in Asia overnight.

The Tokyo financial markets today got their first chance to react to the closure of a major brokerage house.

And the main stock index, the Nikkei, fell about five percent.

But European markets have been more stable, paving the way for this morning's slightly higher opening on Wall Street.

Investors are also awaiting a couple of key economic reports, due at 10 a.m. EST.

The Conference Board releases its latest survey of consumer confidence, and the Commerce Department reports on October's home resales.
