Georgia Tech 67, Stanford 65 Richmond 73, Rice 66

RICHMOND (AP) _ Duane Ferrell scored 29 points, and Stanford’s Terry Taylor missed a 25- footer as time ran out as sixth-ranked Georgia Tech held on to beawt the Cardinals 67-65 in the first round of the Central Fidelity Holiday Classic basketball tournament.

The Yellow Jackets will face Richmond’s Spiders, 73-66 winners over Rice’s Owls, in Saturday’s championship game.

Down 36-29 at intermission, the Cardinals pulled within one at 65-64 with less than two minutes remaining. Georgia Tech center Antoine Ford hit a layup to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 67-64 with 1:23 to play.

Cardinal forward Howard Wright then hit one of two free throws to complete the scoring. Georgia Tech’s Bruce Dalrymple misfired from 18 feet with six seconds remaining.

Ferrell hit 12 of 19 from the field in leading the Yellow Jackets. Ford finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Ferrell and Ford helped the Yellow Jackets boost the lead to as many as 16 points in the second half before the Cardinals rallied on the shooting of sophomore guard Todd Lichti. Lichti led Stanford with 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Wright scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds. Eric Reveno came off the bench for 13 points, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line during the Stanford rally.

Dalrymple, who averaged 10.8 points per game last season, was held to eight points.

Georgia Tech, of the Atlantic Coast Conference, was 27-7 last season while Stanford, of the Pac 10, was 14-16.

Richmond’s junior guard Rodney Rice 20 of his 25 points in the second half, to defeat Rice’s Owls.

With Richmond down 34-27 at halftime, the 6-3 Rice hit five 3-point shots in the first 12 minutes of the second half, scoring 14 of Richmond’s first 20 points in the half to pull the Spiders to within one at 52-51 with 8:17 to play.

The Spiders then outscored the Owls 15-6 over the next six minutes to take a 67-57 lead.

Greg Hines led the Owls with 14 points before fouling out with little more than 3 minutes to play. Mike Cooper had 13, Andy Gilchrist scored 12 and Ronald Robertson 11.

For the Spiders, Peter Woolfolk finished with 15 points, while Steve Kratzer had 10.
