CHICAGO (AP) — Cubs rookie David Bote (BOH’-tee) tries to keep his sensational rookie season rolling today in a game against Cincinnati. The 25-year-old walked off Chicago with a 10th-inning homer yesterday, his second game-ending shot this month. Left-hander Jose Quintana will take the mound for Chicago and right-hander Luis Castillo starts for the Reds. Castillo is coming off a solid start against San Francisco, striking out nine in 6 2/3 innings in an 11-4 victory on Sunday.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Yankees left-hander J.A. Happ starts the first game of a split doubleheader at Baltimore, while rookie Jimmy Yacabonis starts for the Orioles. Happ is 4-0 since being traded from Toronto. In the nightcap, Sonny Gray gets the start for the Yankees against Andrew Cashner. The Yankees moved within 8 1/2 games of the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox after last night’s 7-5, 10-inning win over the Orioles.
PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — Brooks Koepka (KEHP’-kuh) and Jamie Lovemark share the lead at 10 under through two rounds of The Northern Trust, one shot ahead of Adam Scott. Koepka eagled the par-5 13th hole and closed with three straight birdies for a 6-under 65. Scott had the day’s best round with a 64, putting him one shot in front of Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau. Tiger Woods was 10 shots behind after three-putting the 18th green for a 71.
SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) — There’s a three-way tie for the lead after the first round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Boeing Classic. Kent Jones, Scott Parel and Tom Pernice Jr. shot 7-under 65s yesterday. Jones birdied four of his last five holes, and Parel closed with a bogey on the par-5 18th after birdieing the previous four holes. Both are winless on the senior tour.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Suspended Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has issued an apology to the ex-wife of a former assistant coach who was suspected of abusing her. Meyer was widely criticized after a news conference Wednesday for failing to directly address Courtney Smith, who said her former husband Zach Smith had abused her and Meyer was aware of it. Meyer was suspended by the Ohio State board of trustees for three games for sticking by his wide receivers coach for years, amid the allegations and other bad behavior.
