NCAA Rules Lamizana Ineligible
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) _ Rutgers forward Herve Lamizana is ineligible to play, the NCAA ruled Wednesday, because of a loan he obtained from former Seton Hall center Sam Dalembert.
Rutgers athletic director Bob Mulcahy said the school will appeal, a process that could take two weeks.
Lamizana, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, acknowledged receiving a loan this summer from Dalembert, a former high school teammate in New Jersey. Dalembert, who now plays for the Philadelphia 76ers, helped pay Lamizana’s Rutgers tuition.
Lamizana needed to pay his own way after failing to meet NCAA academic requirements for freshman eligibility. He said he told Rutgers officials he planned to get a loan from Dalembert and was told it would not be an NCAA violation.
The school reported the loan to the NCAA, then sat the player out of preseason exhibition games.
