MEXICO CITY (AP) _ The legal attache for the U.S. Embassy was shot as he got out of his car in what appeared to be a botched robbery attempt, an embassy spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Carlos Villar was approached by an unidentified gunman Tuesday evening at a Mexico City shopping center lot, spokeswoman Diana Page said.

The two struggled, and Villar was shot in the leg before the gunman ran off, Page said.

Villar, who heads the embassy's FBI office, was recovering from his wound. He was with his visiting son and daughter-in-law at the time of the attack.

Police were investigating but had no suspects.
