Bakelants defends yellow jersey on team time trial
NICE, France (AP) — Belgian rider Jan Bakelants has defended his yellow jersey in the fourth stage of the Tour de France, a team time trial that was expected to shake up the leaderboard.
After three stages in the searing heat and sinewy climbs of Corisca, the peloton returned to mainland France for the 15.5-mile dash along the streets of the southern seaport of Nice.
Under sunny blue skies, the teams set off at four-minute intervals and the overall team standings are reversed. That means the first team to go was Argos-Shimano and the last team scheduled down the ramp was Bakelants’ RadioShack squad.
The official time is taken from the fifth rider to cross the line and a minimum of five have to finish the stage.
