Bravo Ballroom: BISD to hold 12th annual dance competition this week
The Brownsville Independent School District will hold its 12th annual ballroom dancing competition this week in the Texas Southmost College Arts Center.
The event has become so popular that BISD sought a larger venue for the competition. For years the contest overflowed the Brownsville Event Center and there wasn’t quite enough seating for the finals.
It’s now called BISD Bravo Ballroom: Sabor and Style.
Elementary school competition is today, middle school dancers will perform on Wednesday and high school students on Thursday.
Preliminary rounds are from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. each day and admission is free. Elementary, middle school and high school finals start at 6 p.m. each day and admission is $7 per person, the same as in years past. The box office will be open throughout the preliminary rounds selling tickets for the finals.
The finals each night will be a competition among 10 couples in each of eight ballroom dance styles. At the end the judges will name participants for a grand champion round, with the judges to name the dance style.
The result will be a grand champion in each age group. The doors open at 5 p.m.
“Come join us for an elegant night of ballroom dancing,” Kathleen Jimenez, interim Fine Arts administrator, said. “It’s theater seating so it should be a really nice venue to watch the students perform.”
She said high school theater students will be running the lights and sound as well as helping back stage.
Some 600 dancers in all age categories are participating. Medals and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category.
“I hope the students have a great experience and I hope they have fun, because they’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point.” Jimenez said.
