Bartolo Colon became the top-winning pitcher born in Latin America, punctuating his 246th career victory with a nifty snag as the Texas Rangers roughed up Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners 11-4 last night. The 45-year-old Colon, from the Dominican Republic, made his sixth start since earning his 245th win on June 30 that matched the mark held by Dennis Martinez from Nicaragua. Colon gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings. The portly and popular right-hander walked none and struck out one improving to 6-10 on the season.
Antonio Callaway is proving to be a possession receiver, but not in the manner the Cleveland Browns had hoped. The Browns rookie has been cited for marijuana possession after his car was pulled over by police in Strongville, Ohio, Sunday morning. The police report says Callaway failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was in possession of a “small amount” of marijuana under his seat. He also was driving with a suspended license. The Browns selected Callaway in the fourth round of this year’s draft despite his troubled past at Florida. He was suspended last season for involvement in a credit card fraud case. Callaway also tested positive for marijuana at the NFL combine in February, which caused teams to stay away from him.
The Wayne State volleyball team was picked to finish fifth in the 2018 Preseason NSIC Volleyball Coaches’ Poll released yesterday by the league office. Wildcat senior setter Megan Gebhardt was selected as the Player to Watch in the NSIC this season. The Wildcats return five starters from last year’s team that was 19-12 overall and tied for seventh in the NSIC with a 12-8 league mark. Defending NCAA Division II national champion Concordia-St. Paul was selected the unanimous favorite to win the NSIC this season. Wayne State, who has been ranked in every regular season AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll since September 28, 2009, is scheduled to open the 2018 season on August 24th at a tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida vs. Westminster of Utah at 11:00.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln police arrested a man Monday suspected of having more than an ounce of methamphetamine and some cocaine hidden in Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook’s stolen SUV according to the Lincoln Journal Star. The geolocating service inside the coach’s 2018 Lexus GX helped lead police to the 2500 block of Vine Street on Monday afternoon, where Rondale King was backing up the vehicle, according to an affidavit for his arrest. The SUV was reported stolen from the Devaney Sports Center on July 30, according to the affidavit. Cook was out of town at the time. After they arrested the 38-year-old Lincoln man on suspicion of the auto theft, they smelled marijuana coming from the SUV at a tow lot and searched it, finding more than 46 grams of meth, $180 cash and a small amount of marijuana in a Crown Royal bag suspected to be King’s. Assistant University Police Chief Hassan Ramzah told the Lincoln Journal Star the SUV wasn’t Cook’s, but the coach confirmed to the newspaper last night that he drives the university-leased Lexus that was stolen. King remained in jail last night on $50,000 bond.

The Nebraska team is selected based on the Nebraska Golf Association’s Junior Point Standings published following the Nebraska Amateur. The top six automatically qualify for the squad.
