Newman hired for Discoverer softball

Columbus High Activities Director Dave Hiebner announced in a press release Monday afternoon that the Discoverers have hired a new softball coach.

Kelsey Newman, currently an assistant on the staff of coach Jack Gutierrez at Central Community College-Columbus, is taking over the position after six years of leadership under Paul Braun.

Newman is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan were she received both a bacherlors and a masters degree. After a career playing for the Tigers, Newman then stepped into a graduate assistant role for two years.

She has been assisting in coaching the Raiders since August, has seven years of experience as an ASA softball umpire and has been a private pitching coach.

Newman is the current marketing director and assistant project manager for B-D Construction.

Braun steps down from six years leading the Discoverers. Columbus was 90-127 in his six years with winning seasons of 20-19 in 2014 and 21-14 in 2015.
