Pak, Hamm Chosen for Female Athlete

August 7, 1998

NEW YORK (AP) _ It’s a good summer for women athletes, and that’s reflected in an all-star team selected for The Female Athlete.

Heading the team is golfer Se Ri Pak, who captured two consecutive major tournaments, the LPGA Championship and the U.S. Women’s Open.

Mia Hamm, who scored five of the team’s seven goals as the United States won the soccer gold medal at the Goodwill Games, is one of several athletes who earned recognition from that competition.

Hamm’s teammate, Judy Foudy, was in that group, as were track stars Marion Jones and Jackie Joyner-Kersee, figure skater Michelle Kwan, swimmers Jenny Thompson and Christina Teuscher, and diver Laura Wilkinson.

Isabelle Fijalkowski of France, the high scoring WNBA star of the Cleveland Rockers, also made the team, as did high school tennis champion Julie Beekman of Marion, Ind.

The Female Athlete is a catalog of products for girls and women.
