May 14, 2019

A judge on Monday sentenced a former teacher at Mesa Vista High School in Ojo Caliente to nine years in prison for sex crimes against a student.

A jury in March convicted Miguel G. Garcia, 37, of Española on two counts of sexual contact of a minor and five counts of sexual contact of a minor for having sexually assaulted a female student between the ages of 13 and 18 between 2012 and 2013 when he worked at the school.

Garcia, who was sentenced at a hearing in Tierra Amarilla, will receive about three years pre-sentence confinement credit and following his prison term will be on supervised probation for five years and on parole for anywhere from five years to 20 years, District Attorney’s Office spokesman James Hallinan said in a text message Monday.
