Stocks Little Changed; Dow Up 2.99

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stocks were little changed this morning, with the Dow Jones industrial average edging higher from Tuesday’s record close, which ended a six-month drought for new highs by the blue-chip barometer.

At 11 a.m. on Wall Street, the Dow was up 2.99 at 8,298.60. On Tuesday, the Dow rose 115.09 to 8,295.61, topping its previous all-time best close of 8,259.31, set back on Aug. 6.

Broader stock indicators were mostly positive, but all major indexes were hovering near Tuesday’s closing levels.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 4-to-3 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 190.62 million shares, up from Tuesday’s early pace.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 list was down 0.24 at 1,018.77, and the NYSE composite index was up 0.57 at 530.53. Both measures closed at record highs in Tuesday’s rally.

The Nasdaq composite index was up 3.49 at 1,712.53, and the American Stock Exchange composite index was up 0.76 at 686.80.

In afternoon trading overseas, Frankfurt’s DAX index was up 1.4 percent and London’s FT-SE 100 was up 0.1 percent. Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.
