Police identify man who drowned after canoe overturned
ALBANY, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire State Police’s Marine Patrol has identified a Massachusetts man who drowned in an Albany pond after his canoe overturned.
Marine patrol officials say 49-year-old Mark Wellig of Randolph, Massachusetts, was pronounced dead Sunday after being pulled from Whitton Pond in New Hampshire.
Authorities were called to the pond at 11:18 a.m. Sunday after receiving reports that a canoe had capsized and people were in the water.
Police say all three boaters were wearing life jackets, but a man was trapped underneath the canoe.
Witnesses administered CPR to the man, but he was pronounced dead after being brought to the shore.
The incident remains under investigation.
