Eriksson May Take job in England
LONDON (AP) _ Sven-Goran Eriksson, a Swede who coaches Italian League champion Lazio, has been asked to take over England’s national team.
No foreigner has coached England, which won the 1966 World Cup.
Eriksson was offered the job ``on a short-term and full-term basis″ and ``real progress had been made,″ English Football Association spokesman David Davies said Monday.
``Talks will resume in the near future,″ Davies said.
Kevin Keegan resigned as England’s coach last month after a 1-0 loss to Germany at Wembley Stadium in a 2002 World Cup qualifier.
Lazio’s owner, Sergio Cragnotti, says Eriksson will not leave the club before the end of his current deal, which expires June 30.
Eriksson has also coached clubs in Sweden and Portugal.
After two qualifying games, England is 0-1-1 and last in its group, behind Germany, Finland, Greece and Albania.
