Famed Ukrainian Goalkeeper Dies

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) _ Viktor Bannykov, considered the best goalkeeper in Russia during the 1960s and 1970s, has died, officials said Thursday. He was 62.
The former Ukrainian soccer player, who headed the Ukrainian Soccer Federation (FFU) from 1991-95 and was its vice president since 1996, died Wednesday following a long disease, the FFU said.
The exact cause of death was not immediately available.
Bannykov played for the then-Soviet Dynamo Kiev in 1961-69 and for Torpedo of Moscow in 1970-73. Bannykov played in a total of 258 games within the Soviet championship, and in 39 games for the Soviet national team.
Bannykov was recognized as the country’s best goalkeeper in 1964 and 1970 and was honored with several awards from international soccer organizations.
