125,000 Troops in NATO Maneuvers in West Germany and Denmark

FRANKFURT, West Germany (AP) _ Two major NATO military exercises involving 125,000 troops began in West Germany and Denmark on Monday, the West German military said.

The separate fall maneuvers, named ″Bold Guard,″ and ″Franconian Shield,″ are being watched by observers from the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact countries.

Neutral Switzerland and Austria have also sent observers to the five-day maneuvers, according to the statement issued by the West German military.

″Bold Guard,″ which involves 65,000 soldiers and sailors from Denmark, Britain, the Netherlands, United States and West Germany, is taking place in the northern part of the country and spreads over the border into Denmark.

In southern West Germany, 57,000 troops, including U.S., West German and Canadian units, are participating in ″Franconian Shield,″ the statement said.

In addition, about 3,000 French soldiers are joining in that exercise.
