Firefighters rescue man from icy pond

January 15, 2019

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Fire officials have rescued a 19-year-old man who fell through ice while skating in Massachusetts.

Westborough Fire Chief Patrick Purcell says they received multiple 911 calls of a person falling through the ice on Mill Pond around 3:08 p.m. Monday.

Two firefighters put on cold-water immersion suits, entered the ice and walked until they found the man about 2,000 feet (609 meters) from the shore.

The man has been transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for hypothermia. Officials say the teen is expected to be OK.

Purcell says his team was training for ice rescues just hours before they received the call about the man.

He says they carried out the rescue seamlessly.
