Valencia Routs Bayern Munich; All Italian Clubs Win
Valencia, playing without Romario, routed defending champion Bayern Munich 3-0 Tuesday night in the first round of the UEFA Cup. All four Italian teams in the tournament opened with victories.
Claudio Lopez, Gabriel Moya and Vicente Engonga scored for host Valencia. Romario, the Brazilian forward who signed with the team during the offseason, was kept on the bench by coach Luis Aragones.
The second leg of the home-and-home, total-goals series will be played Sept. 24.
Internazionale of Milan won 3-0 at the French team Guingamp, getting goals from Maurizio Ganz, Youri Djorkaeff and Ciriaco Sforza.
AS Roma won 3-0 at home over Dinamo Moscow. Daniel Fonseca scored twice and Damiano Tommasi scored once.
Jose Antonio Chamot scored a goal with six minutes left to give Lazio of Rome a 1-0 victory over France’s Lens.
Enrico Chiesa scored twice to give Parma a 2-1 victory at home against Portugal’s Vitoria Guimaraes.
Hamburg SV won 2-0 at Glasgow Celtic on goals by Karsten Barlon and Markus Schupp.
Borussia Moenchengladbach won 3-2 at Arsenal of London on goals by Andrzej Juskowiack, Stefan Effenberg and Stefan Passlack. Paul Merson and Ian Wright scored for Arsenal.
Newcastle routed Halmstad of Sweden 4-0 on goals by Faustino Asprilla, Les Ferdinand, Philippe Albert and Peter Beardsley.
