FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — The University of Alaska Fairbanks is hosting a piano competition that features 22 of the world’s best pianists under age 32.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (http://bit.ly/1qr7gEh) reports five competitors took the stage Sunday afternoon for the first of five days of the Alaska International Piano-e-Competition.

Pianists choose their own music and play from memory. The recitals can last up to 75 minutes.

UAF Professor Eduard Zilberkant helped secure the competition and is one of the judges.

He says the Davis Concert Hall is the perfect venue for the competition.

Two pianists from the United States and one each from Germany, Costa Rica and China played Sunday.

Pianists competing are as young as 19.
