Defense, fake punt lift Taylor to opening victory

October 3, 2018

While Katy ISD teams put up some points during non-district play, highlighted by Mayde Creek and Tompkins both topping the 200 mark through four games and Katy averaging 43.5, the district displayed its defensive prowess as well.

Five of the district’s eight teams entered Week 5 allowing 20 points or less per game, led by Tompkins (12.0) and Seven Lakes (16.5). Those teams got the stops started with 25 combined points Sept. 28, with Paetow flexing its defensive muscle in a 13-6 victory at Cleveland.

Five KISD teams have yet to allow their 100th point this season, including Taylor, which stifled Morton Ranch 20-6 on Sept. 29 at Legacy Stadium.

The Mustangs improved to 3-2 overall, dropping Morton Ranch to 3-2 after a successful non-district run by the Mavericks.

Taylor allowed only 147 yards and seven completions on 27 pass attempts. The Mavericks averaged 1.2 yards per rush.

Morton Ranch’s defense was effective as well, allowing 244 yards and matching Taylor with two fumble recoveries.

Gabriel Garcia provided the Mavericks’ offense with field goals of 36 and 39 yards, the first of which broke a scoreless tie at the 6:57 mark of the second quarter.

But Taylor answered with its best drive of the game, covering 75 yards in 10 plays. C.J. Tolbert converted a third-and-10 with a 21-yard catch and run to get the Mustangs started.

Morton Ranch appeared to have Taylor stopped near midfield, but Braedon Mowry took a fake punt 33 yards to the opposing 16-yard line.

Three plays later, Dalton Burden found fullback Gavin Belue in the flat and the junior powered in after being hit at the three for an 11-yard touchdown and a 7-3 halftime lead.

Taylor used two big plays to pull away. Burden threw his second touchdown pass midway through the third quarter, connecting with Julius Loughridge for 43 years.

In the fourth, after a good punt return by Ben Montgomery, Brandon Campbell accelerated through the middle for a 47-yard touchdown and a 20-3 lead.

Both teams have key games this week. Taylor looks for a 2-0 district start against a Seven Lakes team looking to rebound from a close loss to rival Tompkins. Morton Ranch plays a Cinco Ranch squad that defeated Mayde Creek for its first victory of the season.

Oluwatunmise Adeleye, Tompkins

Adeleye and the Falcons defense came up with stop after stop, highlighted by several tackles for loss by Adeleye, a safety and a sack on Seven Lakes’ final drive in a 15-10 Tompkins victory.

David Gbenda, Cinco Ranch

Not only did Gbenda record six solo tackles, three for loss, and a sack from his linebacker position, he rushed for the Cougars’ first two touchdowns to help spark a 44-28 win against Mayde Creek.

Cameron Harper, Cinco Ranch

Harper had a career night on the ground, amassing 202 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries while completing 10 of 18 passes. His 63-yard touchdown produced a 30-0 lead that the Cougars turned into their first win of the season.

Braedon Mowry, Katy Taylor

Mowry needed only three weeks to amass 26 tackles and a team-leading five tackles for loss, two sacks and eight hurries. His work continued as part of a stellar defensive performance in a 20-6 win against Morton Ranch, but his biggest play was a 33-yard run on a fake punt.

Dane Presto, Paetow

Presto matched Alex Elko for the team lead with five solo tackles and made two interceptions to help the Panthers win their first varsity district game, 13-6 at Cleveland.
