Roof over pool at Winona hotel collapses

March 11, 2019

The roof over above the pool at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Winona collapsed early Sunday morning.

According to a post on the hotel’s Facebook page, the roof collapsed “due to an overabundance of rain and snow.”

Nobody was hurt, according to the post, and nobody was in the pool at the time. The hotel had 79 of its 96 rooms occupied last night, but none of them received any damage.

The hotel remains open, but the pool will be closed until further notice.

The damage isn’t visible from the road or outside the hotel. Hotel ownership didn’t allow a Winona Daily News photographer to take photos of the damage from inside the building.

Winona got two inches of snow on Saturday night and early Sunday, but that was preceded by a wintry mix earlier in the day. Since late January, Winona has received more than 60 inches of snow. It’s the third snowiest winter on record, a National Weather Service meteorologist said last week.
