Arafat, CIA Director Meet
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) _ CIA chief George Tenet met with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Thursday after three Israeli soldiers were killed in a Palestinian mob attack on a West Bank police station.
Tenet had planned earlier to meet with Palestinian security officials to try to draw Israel and the Palestinians back to the negotiating table, but met instead with Arafat in Gaza after learning of the killings, Palestinian officials said.
Arafat also spoke with President Clinton and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after the attack in Ramallah, the officials said.
U.S. officials said Tenet had already left the area when Israeli helicopters fired on Arafat’s Gaza headquarters in retaliation for the killing of the Israeli soldiers.
