Shawn Walker, formerly of the First Baptist Church of Wilkes-Barre and now pastor of Dr. Edwards Memorial Congregational Church, will lead the congregation at the 150th anniversary celebration. Dr. Edwards Memorial is a community-focused, Bible based church and all are welcome. Children’s Sunday School is at 9:45 a.m. Special music will be presented by Jack Wise, whose father was a former pastor of the church; Betty Carpenter and Morris Walker, members of the church, and the choir. They will be accompanied by Glenn Ryman, organist of Dr. Edwards Church. A committee of Mary Ann Stelma, D. Jean Bonn, Pam Cartwright, Roberta Troy, and Peter Keller have been working to prepare for this special service. They have been collecting memorabilia, setting up posters of pictures and activities throughout the years, and have collected and set up recipes for a recipe book of members, past and present, and friends. These will be available for purchase on the day of the anniversary. The church was organized 150 years ago by Welsh coal miners. Some of the Welsh activities are still ongoing, including the Gymanfa Ganu (hymn sing) followed by a Welsh Te Bach, the St. David’s Day Tea to honor the patron saint of Wales, and an Eisteddfod, a competition in music and poetry for all ages. The public is welcome at all of these activities.
