33 Dominican Migrants Detained
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ The U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday detained 33 Dominican migrants on a boat believed to be heading toward the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico.
A Coast Guard cutter intercepted the 16-foot wooden boat about seven miles from Mayaguez on the west coast of Puerto Rico at about 3:30 a.m.
The migrants were fed and transferred to U.S. Border Patrol agents in Mayaguez, a written statement from the Coast Guard said.
The Coast Guard said it has detained 59 seaborne migrants in the Caribbean in the last week.
In 1998, the Coast Guard intercepted 1,047 Cubans, 513 Dominican and 1,206 Haitians trying to emigrate from their countries by boat.
