EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Adrian Ilie scored two first-half goals Wednesday to spark Galatasaray of Istanbul, Turkey to a 3-1 international victory over the New York-New Jersey MetroStars.

Galatasaray, the 1997 Turkish champion, dominated the match, outshooting the home team 25-8 while holding a 20-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The MetroStars, who are 6-11 and in the basement of the Eastern Conference in Major League Soccer, completed their 1997 international schedule with a 1-2-1 record.

After missing on three good early chances, Galatasaray scored its first goal in the 21st minute when Ilie and Umit Davala worked a give-and-go on the right side with Davala pushing a pass inside the MetroStars’ defense.

Ilie collected the pass and beat Metros goalkeeper Tony Meola with a 6-yard shot to the far post.

Ilie added his second goal of the match four minutes later, taking a long through-pass from Tugay Kerimoglu and chipping the ball over Meola into the net.

The MetroStars got their only goal in the 26th minute when recently acquired striker Shaun Bartlett leaped high to head Tab Ramos’ corner kick into the Galatasaray net.

The MetroStars had a great chance to equalize in the 74th minute when Giovanni Savarese took a long through-pass in the box. But Galatasaray keeper Richard Kingston came off his line quickly and kicked the ball away before Savarese could pull the trigger.

The Turkish champions added their final goal in the 89th minute on a long hard shot from outside the box by Gheorghe Hagi.

With a MLS game scheduled for Sunday at Giants Stadium against the Los Angeles Galaxy, the MetroStars elected to give Roberto Donadoni the night off to rest his gimpy left ankle. Striker Antony DeAvila also missed the game while playing a World Cup qualifying game with the Columbian National team.
