Western Jet Loses Use Of Engine On Takeoff, Lands Safely
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ A Salt Lake City-bound Western Airlines twin-engine Boeing 737 with 57 passengers aboard returned safely to Oakland International Airport after an engine blew and the plane started shuddering.
The jet had just taken off Tuesday evening when the engine malfunctioned, said Western spokesman Glenn Bozarth. Operating on one engine, the plane returned. The flight was canceled, and the passengers shifted to another aircraft.
″Right after liftoff the plane began to shudder violently,″ said passenger Mike Rippey of Napa.
After about three minutes, the passengers heard an announcement that the aircraft had blown its left engine and was returning to the airport.
The plane halted at the end of the runway and was surrounded by fire trucks. After an inspection of the operating engine, the plane was allowed to proceed to the boarding ramp.
